Millicom is a specialist global emerging markets mobile operator, with over 30 million customers in 13 markets across Latin America and Africa under the Tigo brand. In addition, Millicom provides cable TV and broadband services in Central America. The business has grown very rapidly as penetration has increased in its markets, and its 3 As strategy focusing on Affordability, Availability and Accessibility has been very successful in bringing a high quality mobile service to markets where income levels are typically very low. With penetration in its markets still only at just over 40%, the growth prospects for the future look very good, particularly in Africa where penetration is around 30% in Millicom’s markets. Millicom has also been very successful at growing its market share and introducing new products and services.
Africa has been the fastest growing part of the group in recent years, and opportunities for career development are very attractive. We see future growth coming not only from increased usage of mobile voice services, but also from mobile broadband using high speed “3G” mobile infrastructure, and all the services that we can deliver on our platform. There is little competing fixed line infrastructure in Africa, so the internet will be predominantly mobile and we see mobile phones as the key tool not only for communication, but also for information and entertainment, in these markets. In many of our Latin American markets, Tigo has become one of the employers of choice given its size, its market presence and the working culture, and we are determined to make working in one of our African operations similarly aspirational.
