Barclays was founded in London more than 300 years ago, and what started as a UK bank has become one of the world’s leading global banks operating in more than 50 countries worldwide, with over 48 million customers.
While the Group’s headquarters remain in London, Barclays has established enterprises across Europe, Africa, the Americas and the Asia-Pacific region, incorporating businesses in retail and commercial banking, investment banking and investment management services.
As part of Global Retail Banking, Barclays Africa brings together our long-established businesses in 10 countries across Africa and the Indian Ocean. These include Botswana, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe and through these geographies, our 14,400 employees serve over 2.8 million customers through more than 570 distribution points.
We see the region as a key strategic platform for Barclays globally and a fundamental part of our plan to diversify internationally. Over the last two years we have successfully strengthened our African presence to deliver sustainable, controlled growth and secure market share across all of the key markets in which we operate.
