Citi in Africa

Citi has had a presence in Africa for more than 50 years and currently has nearly 1,200 employees working in 15 countries – Algeria, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and Zambia.

Our Securities and Banking and Global Transaction Services businesses offer trade, foreign investment, cash management, treasury services, investment services, and electronic banking solutions to top-tier local institutions, banks, governments, and public sector entities.

Citi won several regional awards in 2009, including Treasury and Trade Solutions being voted the #1 Cash Management Bank globally and in Africa, and Citi being voted Lead Domestic Cash Management Bank in 24 countries including Algeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. Clients also cast their votes to name Citi the Best USD Bank in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, Middle East and North America and Best Euro Bank in Africa and Latin America. In addition, Citi has recently been named by Global Finance as 2010 Best Bank for Risk Management in Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East.

In 2009, the Citi Foundation invested over $1.2 million in community engagement initiatives in 12 countries across Africa. The grants were focused on micro entrepreneurship initiatives helping entrepreneurs to take their enterprises to the next stage of development, and enabling microfinance institutions to build the capacity of their networks in order to improve services for entrepreneurs. The Citi Foundation also focused on education, which included access to basic education and literacy programs as well as access to higher education institutions.
