Noma Nthimkulu, International Recruitment Resourcer and South African national, gives us her take on the ICT markets in her home country.

Investment in IT is growing at a rate of 8 – 10% per year in South Africa. This has undoubtedly been a driving force in pushing Africa forward as an emerging market.

Have you noticed a change in the number of South African IT vacancies recently?

There is a positive change in the number of vacancies for South Africa in general. The emerging markets are booming right now and professionals are keen to move back home to take advantage of these opportunities. Within South Africa, IT is one of the fastest growing industries and clients have come on board to help find these candidates. The positions vary in terms of levels and skills, from entry-level to very senior roles.

Have you seen a change in South African IT candidates over the last year?

We are seeing more and more South African candidates who have had extensive experience working in Europe and America. These candidates tend to be senior with more specialised skills and also consulting experience.

Do you believe there is an IT skills shortage in South Africa?

There is the need for more IT professionals, particularly with specialised skills. With advancements in technology, and increased investment in the industry, companies are looking to keep up with their needs.
