INTRODUCTION
Roadwing (Pty) Ltd, a subsidiary of APM Terminals in South Africa, currently has a vacancy for a Managing Director to direct, manage, oversee and grow its national operation and footprint. Roadwing is a short-haul trucking operation whose primary activity is to transport international import and export containers.
The transportation service is provided by Owner Drivers who supply 240 mechanical horses to Roadwing, who in-turn have 444 chassis which are utilized by the Owner Drivers to supply a high standard trucking service.
Roadwing currently operates out of six locations namely Johannesburg being its Head Office, Durban, East London, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria. Roadwing’s largest customer base includes Shipping Lines and clearing agents with a small percentage of export manufacturers. Roadwing transports between 170 000 and 180 000 containers nationally on an annual basis to a wide customer base which is currently in excess of 120. Its primary customers include the Anglo America mines, Chrysler, Mercedes Benz, Iveco and Atlantis Diesel.
PURPOSE
• The purpose of this role is to perform the duties of the Managing Director for Roadwing (Pty) Ltd.
• This position is accountable for leading, developing and maintaining effective business strategies through the minimization of costs whilst providing excellent customer service, and maintaining high staff morale.
• Responsible for recognizing and responding to business needs ensuring strong corporate governance and business development.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
OPERATIONS
• To ensure that at all times, Roadwing operates within the ambit of the applicable laws governing Road Freight in South Africa.
• To plan equipment according to the demand within the various locations nationally.
• Accountable for ensuring that all equipment is compliant with legislation and/ or customer demand.
• Responsible for directing and managing multi-disciplinary transport related projects.
• Overall responsibility for the direction and management of business operations.
• Responsible for the development of operational strategy and business continuity plans.
• Responsible for the ongoing establishment and maintenance of appropriate systems to monitor, evaluate and report on all operational departments.
• Responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of business strategy.
• Development of transportation models.
• All transport undertaken is compliant with the Road Traffic Act of South Africa.
FINANCE
• Compile and present compelling business cases to the Board of Directors in respect of CAPEX purchases.
• Effective management of capital budget and expenditure, ensuring that the business achieves a profit year on year.
• Responsible for business development and revenue growth.
CUSTOMER
• Full accountability for improving transportation and recognizing and responding to the needs of both existing and potential customers.
• Develop sound relationships with key stakeholders and relevant bodies.
• Responsible for service optimization and high level maintenance of service standards.
• Key account management to include customer relationship management.
HSSE & RISK
• Recognizing and responding to the needs of the business in respect of HSSE and risk management, ensuring that preventative measures are in place.
PEOPLE
• Lead and direct transformation within the business.
• Responsible for the BBBEE scorecard and diversity within the workplace.
• Direct corporate services such as HR, Finance and IT.
• Lead Board meetings.
• Effective people management through maintaining a culture of motivation and respect.

CRITICAL QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
• Appropriate tertiary qualification, preferably transport related or equivalent.
• 10 years’ experience, 5 of which must be at a Senior Management capacity.
• Excellent knowledge of logistics, transport and container terminal operations.
• Proven ability to operate at a strategic board level.
• Possess effective analytical, finance, reporting and problem solving skills.
• Has a proactive approach to business development and diversification.
• High energy levels and must possess a passion for trucking and people.
• Requires ability to use computerized operation software system(s)
• Has full knowledge of international standards of safe working practices within the industry as well as occupational health and safety laws
