Careers in Africa London 2010 - A Summit...

Think the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Rockefeller Centre; yes we are talking about New York where Global Career Company launched our first US summit of the year. It took place at the Columbia faculty house on the weekend of the 16th to the 18th of July 2010. Columbia University is situated in the heart of New York and is the oldest institution of higher learning in the state of New York, the fifth oldest in the United States, and one of the country's nine Colonial Colleges founded before the American Revolution and a member of the Ivy League.

Expectations were soaring, candidates and companies alike were filled with enthusiasm and excitement. A tailor made event for Vodafone and ECOWAS to interview and spend sufficient time networking with invited candidates. One of the highlights of the event were the highly informative presentations by Chizoba Mojekwu, HR Director of ECOWAS and Vivian Wiredu, HR Business Partner of Vodafone who shared their knowledge of their companies and the African market with an engaged audience. Both companies remain employers of choice among the US candidates.

The team at Global Career Company enjoyed interacting with our US candidates and we are anticipating our return to the big apple for yet another successful event in 2011!

ECOWAS

Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is a regional group of fifteen countries, founded in 1975. Its mission is to promote economic integration in "all fields of economic activity, particularly industry, transport, telecommunications, energy, agriculture, natural resources, commerce, monetary and financial questions, social and cultural matters”.

Its headquarters, the ECOWAS Commission, consists of a ten-member commission working towards fulfilling the vision of creating an ECOWAS of People- a borderless, prosperous and cohesive region where people have the capacity to access and harness its enormous resources through the creation of opportunities for sustainable development and environmental preservation.

The Commission formulates its own programmes and, subject to its governing bodies, manages their diversity. Thus, employees of ECOWAS work with governments and peoples across the region, helping to harmonize policies and develop programmes in critical areas including Agriculture, women, Children and Youth, Private Sector, Infrastructure and Governance.

Core areas of activities include, among others, infrastructure, private sector development, policy harmonization, regional trade, gender equality, climate change and regional integration.

ECOWAS is committed to diversity and strive to hire the best brains of member-states from across the globe. The ECOWAS staff are diverse in many respects, including gender, culture, education and experience demonstrating the richness in our diversity, evident across member-states.

ECOWAS offers a variety of roles suited to your career goals, background and innate talents, providing opportunities to advance, grow as you are ensured that you will experience seamless work-life balance.

Candidate Interview

Interviews are a crucial part of the recruitment process for all organisations. Their purpose is to give the interviewer(s) a chance to assess a candidate’s suitability for a role and the candidate to demonstrate his/her abilities and personality. One of the frequent ways organisations assess candidates’ suitability is in the use of competency-based questions.

Faced with a pool of candidates who on paper may all have similar or equal attributes for the job, a hiring manager will have to make a decision based on a meeting with the candidates. He/she may decide to use competency-based questioning as a technique to identify previous performances in key areas, analyse them and determine if the candidate has the required experience, behavior and potential to fulfill the new role. The focus of the interviews will be determined by the competencies required to perform the job.

Candidate Interview

IWhat first motivated you to move back to Kenya & were your expectations met when you moved back home?

I had been in the UK in 2007/08 for an 8 month work assignment and the exposure and experience  I received led me to want to prolong my stay. I found it fascinating and exciting to work within a diverse multicultural community. Upon successful completion of my assignment  I applied for a UK work permit and gave up a successful and well paying job back in Kenya to get a better taste of the 'global ' workplace.
