Job Description

Purpose of the job:

The Asset Management Company is a disruptive start-up based out of Nigeria aiming to become one of the top 3 in the asset management industry in Africa through the introduction of market leading innovation and solutions.  The MD is responsible for shaping the strategy, building the organization and launching innovative products and partnerships to drive the growth of the new business. In addition, the MD is responsible for building an agile, digital and innovation driven culture in the business.

Key responsibilities:

  • Shape the strategy for the new Asset Management company (with inputs from the Board), identifying revenue-generating models, and identifying potential partnerships to acquire customers and expand the suite of services/value-adds for customers
  • Develop an implementation roadmap for the strategy, including shaping thinking on roll-out of products and solutions, overall IT architecture, organizational needs, and customer acquisition/retention strategy
  • Ensure the new business has clearly defined metrics to evaluate success and continuous, measurable improvement
  • Build the organization for the new business. This would include designing the organizational structure, identifying capabilities required, prioritizing immediate positions to be filled, and leading the recruiting process.
  • Launch the new business including
    • Leading a team to design and deliver innovative products, and re-imagine customer journeys
    • Leading a team to drive customer attraction, retention, and increased revenues through digital platforms and physical channels (where applicable)
    • Leading formation of new partnerships to drive growth
    • Driving the investment decision making process
  • Leading deal origination by managing high value relationships at a strategic level
  • Keep track of key developments in the digital, data analytics, and asset management space to continually identify new ideas, solutions that could provide opportunities for the business to accelerate growth ambitions.
  • Implement measures to drive consistency in the delivery of amazing customer experience across all channels and touch points
  • Lead by example to build a culture that is agile, digital and innovation driven

Personal Specification


  • A minimum of 10 years relevant post-qualification experience of which at least 5 must have been in the financial services industry and at least 4 at the senior management level
  • Deep experience and business acumen in the asset management industry including portfolio diversification and rebalancing, securities valuation, market innovations, financial advisory and an understanding of its digital needs
  • Experience in an entrepreneurial setting, ideally in a technology start-up, with a demonstrated ability to build a vision and strategy for a digital-enabled business, recruit a team, and launch programs / products / services.
  • Experience in Africa or other emerging market is preferred, having preferably already managed the complexity of a “corporate role”, that goes from developing the strategic framework till delivering innovative ideas /digital solutions and execution
  • Track record of scaling up start-up operations either at team, division or company level


  • Collaborative and strong capacity to partner with multiple players (e.g. vendors, regulators, management of other business lines etc.)
  • Customer-centric with strong sales and business development mindset
  • Open-minded, with a track record of thinking differently and comfortable exploring perspectives outside traditional banking norms and conventions
  • Strong belief in technology and the role of data analytics in driving decision making and business value
  • Possesses a growth mindset at the personal and business level
  • Entrepreneurial and dogged in terms of targets and ambition
  • High energy levels and cultural openness.
  • Good standing and assertiveness, with excellent teamwork attitude, with proven ability to influence and coordinate team beyond his/her own department

Skills and knowledge:

  • A minimum of first degree or its equivalent in any discipline. Qualification in banking, finance, accounting, business management, law, or economics would be an advantage        
  • Ability to develop new creative concepts and then take them from discovery phase through to delivery.
  • Ability to think as a customer, to anticipate new customer needs and to further develop the range of services
  • Proven determination, ability to show persuasiveness and leadership in difficult situations
  • Successfully demonstrated analytical and conceptual knowledge and a highly efficient and structured work method
  • Strong network in the global digital and assets community
  • Relevant Professional qualification (CFA, ICAN, ACCA, CISI…)
