New Recruitment Summit for Francophone African Talents in Paris

June 2010

The place to be for any Francophone African talents last month was the Careers in Africa Summit in Paris, which took place 16-18 April. The reputation and success of the Careers in Africa Recruitment Summits throughout the world is unparalleled, however the launch of a new Summit was always a risky enterprise, especially in the current climate. However, the gamble taken by Global Career Company quickly paid off:

Rupert Adcock, Managing Director at Global Career Company says: “With companies starting to confirm their presence as early as last November, we knew immediately that the event would be a success. Multinationals and African companies alike were eager to meet with the talented pool of African candidates present at the Summit, to recruit and add value to their operations in Africa. They didn’t hesitate to bring in large delegations, involving Country Managers, HR Directors and Line Managers to prove they were serious about recruiting.”

Over the course of the week-end, there was no time for sightseeing, as delegates and candidates were busy attending company presentations, networking, exchanging CVs and business cards, and more importantly proceeding to scheduled and spontaneous interviews.

Over 20 companies recruited at the event, including the likes of G.E, Lafarge, Total, Schneider Electric, Siemens, Citibank, MTN, BGFI and many more. Over formal 500 interviews took place, all for opportunities in Francophone and North Africa.

The ECOWAS delegation, who interviewed over 85 candidates, was impressed by the level of expertise brought by the candidates and planned to take over 50% of them through to second stage interviews. Another great player in the African market, Orange, managed to interview candidates for 6 Francophone countries and multiple functional areas. Their HR Business Partner for Africa was very positive about the whole event: “I really enjoyed the Summit. Everything from organisation, welcome, contacts to interviews was managed professionally, efficiently and in a friendly manner. I would like to thank the Global Career Company team for such a great event!”

Sana Chakir, Recruitment Lead for Global Career Company explained: “Some candidates travelled a long way to attend the event… We were impressed by the motivation of some of them, who had to catch several flights and use various transportation modes to be there, despite the tough travel conditions that week-end. They visibly took this opportunity very seriously, which proves they are extremely determined to find their new career opportunity back in Africa.”

The Careers in Africa team is now getting ready for the next stops on its busy calendar of events: in London, New York, Johannesburg, Sao Paolo and Houston. They are also planning to renew the Paris experience next year, to help many more candidates find their dream job in Africa…

Global Career Company launches strategic local partnerships in Angola

July 2009

Career Company has been operating for 7 years through its Careers in Africa recruitment service and over that time we have recruited over 500 Angolans back into Angola for 60 companies out of our client base of 200 major companies across Africa. We are the market leader in recruiting Angolans around the world into Angola and are a major contributor to the Angolanisation program.

With our team of 30 African recruitment professionals, 20% of which are Angolan and specialise in Angolan development, we pioneered the service of recruiting Angolans internationally, and since we started in 2002, other companies have followed. Global Career Company still succeeds though in leading from the front. Testament to this is our unrivalled suite of Summits around the world (London, Lisbon, Rio, Sao Paulo, Washington, Houston, Johannesburg) and our full recruitment service, offering clients a choice from one-off recruitment for critical hires to world-famous recruitment summits to fully-outsourced recruitment campaigns.

In 2009, we have recruited over 150 graduates and professionals into 50 of our clients across the sectors of oil, gas and energy, telcos and technology, banking and professional services, consumer goods, manufacturing, engineering, construction, logistics and supply chain in Angola and in June alone, we won an annual contract for all the recruitment for Pumangol’s growth plans in Angola, have been awarded a preferred supplier agreement with Chevron Angola for the next 2 years, have staffed the management team for Multichoice, amongst others.

Our exciting news in July includes the launch of our Summit in South Africa, recruiting Angolans in Namibia and South Africa, and with most of

the Angolan graduates and professionals having applied, those attending will have 1st – and probably the only – choice to hire, as companies continue to be really aggressive in their hiring. It does not pay to be second in Angola.

We follow this with our 2nd Summit in Brazil, this event being in Rio in September.

We also announce the exciting news of our

strategic alliance with our local partners. Together, we will provide the Angolan market specialisation in Human Resources, from international to local recruitment, advertising, PR, Research Studies and Training services. We will be in Luanda in July visiting companies with our local partners.

Critical Skills Sought for Africa

March 2010

In an address issued during the recently concluded AU Summit in Addis Ababa, African Development Bank Group President, Donald Kaberuka confirmed that Africa would probably resume its pre-crisis growth path in 2010 and was likely to be the second fastest growing continent after Asia. Businesses across Africa also echo these sentiments and are therefore preparing for future productivity and growth. Central to this development is the drive to recruit professionals possessing critical skills and this has in turn led organisations like Barclays, ECOWAS, GE, Lafarge, Nestlé, Schlumberger and Vodafone to conduct international recruitment campaigns as part of their overall skills development strategy.

Global Career Company,

a London-based international recruitment consultancy, has been at the forefront of recruiting the cream of Africa’s professionals working abroad with an enviable track record spanning eight years of working with over 200 of Africa’s leading employers.

Rupert Adcock, Managing Director at Global Career Company notes that there are some key trends emerging in the current market. “Career opportunities for individuals with extensive industry experience especially in Banking and ICT

are increasing significantly across the region. Africa’s financial sector remained essentially sound throughout the crisis and the African telecommunications market is showing great promise and is expected to experience a faster growth rate than any other region over the next three to five years.”

Players in these sectors are among those seeking to bolster their workforces with experienced professionals possessing global experience. It is an added bonus that this, in turn, helps these companies reduce their reliance on expatriate expertise.

Global Career Company’s Careers in Africa Recruitment Summit hosted annually in London is one such channel and is already the largest African recruitment event in the world. This year’s Summit has already seen a marked increase in the number of companies looking to recruit into Africa and the number of executives applying for African-based roles.

“Our Careers in Africa Recruitment Summit is a unique opportunity for clients to recruit some of the world’s brightest talent, and for candidates provides a great opportunity to get themselves in front of key decision makers within some of the regions biggest and most highly regarded companies,” adds Adcock.

Charles Hoyt, Manager Facilities Engineering at Chevron Angola was thrilled with the outcomes of the Summit after participating in May 2009, “I made twelve formal offers and received ten confirmations

on the spot. These were to a variety of engineering candidates – fresh graduates and experienced professionals. The other teams also made multiple offers.”

The event is now in its 8th year and since its inception has been a major facilitator for African recruitment and development. This years’ event takes place between 28th to 30th May in London and will be attended by 50 of the world’s largest companies, including Kenya Commercial Bank, Nigerian Breweries, Tigo, Wärtsilä and the SAFAL Group.

Kabeho Solo, Chief Human Resources Officer at National Microfinance Bank recognizes the value of these Summits, “This event continues to be a source of high calibre talent from diverse backgrounds.”

Angela Mensah-Poku, a Ghanaian professional who had resided in the UK for many years is clear on how useful the Careers in Africa Summit has been to her career: “After multiple interviews with different companies, I am now back home working for Vodafone Ghana.”
