APM Terminals Mauritania S.A. Inland Services is located in Mauritania’s capital and has a Branch in Nouadhibou (450 kms North of Nouakchott), and is a part of the Western and Central Africa Cluster Region headquartered in Tema, Ghana. Arabic is the country’s official language, with French as the established working language (although each ethnic group speaks its own language). APM Terminals Mauritania S.A. is the agent representing APM Terminals in Mauritania. The agency in Nouakchott is amongst the biggest set up of WCA Region. APM Terminals Mauritania S.A. holds a leading share in the containerized depot and stevedoring market of Mauritania. The country is perceived as politically stable with a democratically elected government in place.
The Workshop Manager will drive the Maintenance Department to ensure highest operational viability of all operations handling equipment; support the Inland Service Entity to deliver highest quality service to its customers and high returns to its shareholders. This entails responsibility for leadership, clear direction, and operational efficiency, ensuring highest quality level in Maintenance, repair and developing staff.
Based in Nouakchott and reporting to the Mauritania Country Manager, the Workshop Manager APM Terminals Mauritania is part of the local leadership team and will work closely with the Inland Service management teams in Mauritania. The position will also look after the branch in Nouadhibou, both remotely and in person (some internal travel will be expected).

Key Responsibilities
• The Workshop Manager APM Terminals Mauritania is primarily responsible for providing leadership and direction to the Maintenance Department, in order to ensure the highest quality level in terms of maintenance, readiness and repair, as well as to maintain the operational viability of the terminal facility and all operations handling equipment. Moreover, the role oversees development of local policies and procedures of the maintenance department, and is further responsible for improving team knowledge by capability training and coaching. The position is complex and of pivotal importance as it has a direct impact on the operational and financial aspects of the terminal.
• The position is primarily expected to deliver by following specific manufacturer’s maintenance schedules while setting objectives for subordinated positions. It is expected to have a market contribution in the development of new product processes and standards which support the terminal existing business strategy, with non-delivery having a direct impact on the terminals ability to function. The position is also expected to constantly contribute to improving work processes, methods and technical efficiency of machinery and equipment.
• Responsibility for the effective daily operation of all machinery including electricity plant and building in the Terminal.
• Provision of operational direction for the Workshop Department, and ensuring that productivity and efficiency standards are met.
• Building a preventive maintenance schedule of all equipment in the Workshop to reduce damages and downtimes of all machinery.
• Monitoring and developing maintenance staffs to ensure technical skills are maintained, and that a transfer of that knowledge is made to local nationals whenever appropriate.
• Ensuring good communication between maintenance and operations department to minimize equipment downtime.
• Ensuring good communications through technical group and related interactions so that activities are running smoothly on a regular basis.
• Overseeing the administrative requirements of the Workshop, including warranty obligations, inspection records, manual updates, equipment defect reports, maintenance services, policies, procedures, and practices.
• Overseeing machinery design modification, in order to improve productivity, safety & efficiency.
• Working closely with the Head of HSSE to ensure safety policies rules and regulations are reviewed revised issued and posted on an ongoing basis.
• Working closely with HR to obtain clarification, direction and consultation regarding labour law, company policies and procedures and consistent application.
• Reviewing and recommending updates to maintenance services policies and procedures to ensure quality, reliability, and efficiencies.
• Reviewing new equipment for suitability and making recommendations, based on cost, availability, and needs of business operations.
• Organizing meetings with staff to communicate goals, objectives planning and scheduling, and to motivate the organization to achieve these goals.
• Briefing daily activities to the Managing Director and seeking advice as required.
• Provision of complete and accurate reports to management team, as needed.
• Ensuring good housekeeping practices throughout the workshop.
• Providing supervision and direction for the maintenance staff including the following:
o Direction and instruction to subordinate staff, including regular feedback and regular appraisals.
o Following of company management policies and procedures in the application of managing subordinates.
Must have requirements:
• The successful candidate will have proven expertise in managing teams through well-developed skills and knowledge of technical and associated functions.
• Requires minimum a college degree in marine engineering, mechanical electrical or civil engineering or related field.
• Requires 5 to 7 years of general experience in related position in the material handling logistics or transportation industry.
• Must have superior working knowledge of terminal maintenance practices and principles, as well as specifics knowledge of support equipment cranes and power generation.
• Must have general knowledge of container yard equipment, as well as knowledge of procurement and stock control processes.
• Must have proven interpersonal and people management skills.
• Must have demonstrated effective negotiation and conflict resolution skills as well as excellent managerial skills, including planning, organizing and directing work.
• Must have a strong track record in leadership and organization skills.
• Must have the ability to work under pressure in a challenging environment and a remote location.
• Must have the ability to create a work environment with high focus on growth and development of staff.
• Must have a Result oriented nature with strong time management and multi-tasking skills.
• Must have full verbal and written proficiency in English and French.
Additional assets:
• A degree in management, business or related field would be considered.
• Extensive knowledge of general HSSE issues and familiarity with maritime codes.
• Working knowledge of budget preparation, basic financial related matters, and reporting against financial objectives.
• Specific crane knowledge.
• Verbal (and ideally also written) fluency in Arabic.
