Vision & Purpose

The role is supposed to help the Bank to achieve its mission “stimulating  a consistent expansion of and diversification of African trade so as to rapidly increase Africa’s share of global trade, while operating as a first classprofit orientedsocially responsible financial institution and a centre of excellence in African trade matters” by developing opportunities for business development in trade projects and export development finance at the regional level and in case reallocated from HQ, he/she should be providing leadership for various branch administrative matters as may be required in liaison with the Administrative Services department.  

Reporting to the Director & Global Head,  Client Relations, the job holder is responsible for leading and providing direction to the Client Relations Managers in the Branch on implementation of business plans, client account plans and strategies; managing a strong team of client relations bankers and accountable for the overall P&L of the Branch. 

The Client Relations Department covers clients of all industries/sectors across Africa to provide integrated financial solutions to clients, with products/services including Corporate Finance, Project Finance, Specialised Funding including ECA Finance, Syndications, Trade Finance and other financial advisory across all sectors. 

During the business development process, the client relations bankers will work closely with the product expert teams and execution teams and external professional consultants to deliver viable product/financial solutions to clients.  

The main focus of this position is to proactively engage the Bank’s clients in the Region on an individualized basis to deepen relationships and deliver the Bank’s full product offering. 

As Regional Manager, the role is responsible for building deep relationships with the Bank’s corporate customers and government officials in the regional and providing them with the excellent service they have come to expect from us. 

Your key aim will be to manage an extensive portfolio of customers, acting as a trusted advisor to each of them. You will also be expected to add to your portfolio, by targeting prospective customers and building strong relationships with them.  

Other responsibilities include managing risk within your portfolio, and supporting, coaching and developing members of the team. 

Nature & Scope

The position holder will be required to draw up the annual strategic and marketing plans for the geographic region and lead the implementation of the plans for the achievement of the Bank’s objectives in these areas.  The position holder will also be required to supervise Client Relations Managers and Associates and identify the Bank’s key/core customers in each region and draw up Account Management Plans for the top customers in Branch for the purpose of maximizing cross selling of the Bank’s products and services. 

 The Bank has rolled out a n development and business delivery model in order to bring its operations closer to its clients; grow its portfolios from sovereign and private sector operations; and expand the revenue of the Bank.  This model will enable the Bank to better deploy high quality knowledge and advisory services, and, most importantly, to accelerate its developmental impacts across Africa.   

The Bank has established six (6) regional development and business delivery offices, with one in each region of Africa: North Africa, Southern Africa, East Africa, Anglophone West Africa, Central Africa and Francophone West Africa.   

The Regional Chief Operating Officer North Africa will drive and ensure the operational efficiency, effectiveness and overall health of the Bank’s portfolio across the region to achieve significant developmental impacts.  

The Regional Chief Operating will oversee the full implementation and integration of all aspects of the Bank’s work in that region :  

  • Advancing regional integration through the development and execution of major regional infrastructure and development projects and by supporting Regional Economic Communities.  
  • Strengthening the human and institutional capacities of countries, and deepening the capacity of the Bank to become the thought leader on knowledge products and advisory services to countries.  
  • Building effective collaboration with bilateral and multilateral finance and development institutions to ramp up co-financing and loan syndications.  
  • Developing and deploying special programs and advisory services to support fragile states.  
  • S/he will spearhead regional business development and investment, driving resource mobilization across the countries under his/her remit and growing significantly the business of the Bank.  
  • S/he will work closely with Global Head Client Relations and Directors to deliver on the Bank’s program the region to achieve transformational development impacts.  
  • The Regional Chief Operating Officer will collaborate with internal and external partners to accelerate private sector investments through the development and implementation of Bank products, amongst other initiatives

Personal Specification

Skills, Knowledge & Attitude
  • Post graduate degree in Business Administration, Banking or Finance from a recognized University or a recognized post graduate professional qualification in Banking;  
  • Sound experience of at least 10 years with a leading financial services organisation and familiarity with the major trade finance products to be offered to clients especially syndication, co-financing, club deals, correspondent banking products including letters of credit, factoring, forfaiting, structured trade finance, carbon financing, corporate finance risk participations, project-related financing and considerable knowledge of how these work; 
  • Ability to communicate and function in a culturally diverse and change oriented setting with good knowledge of banking practices in Africa;  
  • Ability to interact with senior officials of banks, corporates and governments and to represent the Bank in important professional fora where oral presentation of papers will be necessary to high level technical and professional audiences 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and French. Knowledge of the Bank’s other working languages is an added advantage (Arabic and Portuguese); 
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including ability to organize and manage human resources to attain goals.
