Candidate Guide

Before the Summit

Research the participating companies – the companies that have confirmed their attendance to this year’s event include Old mutual, Lafarge Nigeria, Lafarge South Africa, Afreximbank, L’Oreal, Nigerian Breweries, Vinci, Exim Bank, Unilever, Citi, Oceaneering, Puma Energy, Henkel, NMB, Safaricom, LC Waikiki, APM Terminals, Seadrill, Aker Solutions, Shoprite, Coca-Cola Sabco, Dresser-Rand, Schlumberger, Nestle, Coca-Cola CEWA, The Education Corporation, ECCBC and Wananchi. Research their profiles, industries and operations as well as the job opportunities they offer in Africa.

Review your CV and take plenty of copies with you – you will have the opportunity to submit your CV to attending delegates from participating companies during the networking session, which they can review at the event afterwards. Kindly ensure all your CV information is up-to-date. It may be a good idea to have contact details (email addresses and phone numbers) for both Africa and Europe, to ensure you are easily reached.

Prepare for your elevator pitch – Prepare a punchy, memorable statement about your experience, motivation and what you are looking for. In addition, prepare some relevant questions you would like to ask. You should aim to stand out from a pool of 300 candidates. Companies have limited interview slots throughout the weekend, so the more you stand out, the higher the chances of being selected for interviews at the event or afterwards.

What to bring

  • Invitation Letter and Candidate Guide – This is your ‘entry ticket’ for the Summit
  • Mobile Phone – we will use this to contact you with any additional interview opportunities
  • Copies of your CV
  • Pen and Notebook

Check In

Get to the event early – candidate check in starts at 14:00 on Friday 16th of May and at 08:00 on Saturday the 17th of May. We highly recommend you arrive on time to maximize your opportunities.

Dress formally and look professional – at networking events, people assess each other, albeit subtly. It is therefore important that you dress appropriately for the event. We strongly recommend a formal business look at all times as you will meet decision makers and may be called for a formal interview on short notice.

Networking Reception

Friday 16th of May between 17:30 and 19:30 at the Hilton London Canary Wharf Hotel (Exhibition Area)

Saturday, 17th May between 08:00 and 18:00 at the Hilton London Canary Wharf Hotel (Exhibition Area)

Please attend only those sessions to which you have been invited.

Initiate conversations – it is a good idea to interact with other candidates as they may be your future colleagues. You can start your conversations with the people around you by introducing yourself and giving a firm handshake. Good eye contact and listening as well as contributing to the conversation are also very important. Our previous summits have seen candidates form professional relationships, business partnerships or personal friendships.

Company Presentations and Training Sessions

The participating companies will give presentation at the summit and Training Sessions are scheduled to be running on the spot from 10:00 to 17:00 on Saturday the 17th of May at Battersea, Hilton London Canary Wharf Hotel Meeting Rooms 3 & 4, 5.

The Company Presentation will give you an opportunity to gain some in-depth insights on the companies – their career opportunities, operations, strategies and cultures.
Training Sessions will focus on the two topics: The Insiders guide to Summit success workshop and Relationship Management in the Workplace.

There is a limit of 50 seats for each training session and they are only accessible via reservation, please print and bring your confirmation letter if you have already successfully booked.10 supplementary seats per session will be kept for the candidates on site, therefore we advise you to arrive earlier to secure a seat.

The room for the Company Presentations will offer seating for approximately 50 candidates which will be determined on a first-come-first-served basis.

Interview Process

The interviews will commence from 09:00 and last throughout the day on Saturday the 17th of May. They will be ending at 12:00 on Sunday the 18th of May.

Pre-scheduled Candidates – please make sure to inform our Recruitment Consultants as soon as possible if you are unable to make your interview. The earlier you let us know, the earlier we are able to liaise with the company for an alternative arrangement. This being said, we cannot guarantee to rearrange your interview as the decision is at the sole discretion of the companies. They usually have a good pool of candidates available to take up the spot.

On-the-Spot Candidates – if you are selected for a face to face interview by delegates from attending companies at the event, one of our Recruitment Consultants will confirm the specific day and time slot with you on either Saturday the 17th of May or Sunday the 18th of May.

Post Summit

Interview feedback from the Company – some companies offer suitable candidates roles at the summit, others may offer roles afterwards following their individual selection process. Please ensure that at the end of your interview, you ask for the business cards or contact details of your interviewer(s) to ensure you are able to follow up after the summit.

Support from our Careers in Africa Team – Our Recruitment Consultants are more than happy to assist you even after the summit either to help you seek the feedback from the participating companies or to further assist you to look for other potential job opportunities with our global clients outside of the London summit, so please keep us updated about your progress with the client after the summit.
